Preheat oven to 400 degrees
Grease a casserole bowl with butter.
Start by making layers of the following.......
thinly sliced potatoes, (Yukon gold are good),
salt and pepper,
sprinkle of flour on top
thin layer of diced onions
and layer of cheddar cheese. (the cheese is optional) but I like it.
Repeat layers until casserole is almost to the top ending with cheese.
Now cover the entire casserole with whole milk.
If desired for crunchy topping you may add one more layer of cheese and bread crumbs to top it off. (not necessary)
bake at 425 degrees for 1 hour or until brown and bubbly.
Let sit for about 15 mins before serving to set.
you can substitute half and half or cream instead of milk, or go 50/50
or maybe adding different cheeses etc.....
