     Depression Cake-Made in the 1930s

Ingredients
1 cup raisins
2 cups water
1 cup sugar
2 tablespoons lard (can substitute margarine or butter)
2 cups flour
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon soda
pinch salt
 

Instructions
Bring raisins and water to a boil and cook until raisins are plump.
Mix sugar and shortening until blended. Add 1 cup of the raisin water to the sugar and lard and mix well. Add dry ingredients and raisins. Mix well.
Bake 350 degree oven, 20 minutes. 9x13 pan.
