Heat olive oil in large pot; add the finely chopped onions and garlic. Saute until they are soft and golden; do not brown. Add the cans of crushed and pureed tomatoes, salt and herbs. Simmer slowly for 1-2 hours, stirring often so bottom does not burn.
If adding meatballs, add them about 1/2 hour into cooking time.
