Preheat oven to 325°. Cook 1 c sugar on med-low heat until melted, about 20 min. Do not stir. Reduce heat to low and cook 5 min. or until golden brown stirring occasionally. Quickly pour into an ungreased shallow 10'' round dish, tilting to coat pan. Place dish in a large baking pan and let let 10 min. Heat milk until bubbles form around sides of pan, then remove from heat. Combine eggs, salt, and remaining sugar and whisk well. Stir in 1 c warm milk, then return all to milk pan and mix well. Stir in vanilla. Slowly pour into prepared baking dish. Add 3/4'' of hot water to baking pan to make a water bath for baking dish. Bake 35-40 min. until center is set. Remove to cool on rack. Cool 1 hour, then chill overnight.
