Mix sugar, shortening, eggs, salt, vanilla, soda and flour. Roll out flat. To make filling, soften dates in water for 1 hour, then add sugar. Do not cook filling. Spread date filling on top of rolled-out dough. Roll and chill in refrigerator for several hours, then slice and bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes.
