Melt 6 Tbsp of the butter. Add flour adn salt and cook until bubbling. Add milk gradually, stirring constantly, and cook until smooth and thick. Fry onions quickly in 2 Tbsp of butter. Place a layer of thinly sliced potatoes in a well buttered baking dish. Sprinkle with onions, add a layer of chipped beef, and pour over all a layer of white sauce. Add another layer of each and finish the top with a layer of potatoes and white sauce. Bake in a reflector oven for about 1 hour.
