Cream together shortening and sugar. Add one egg at a time, beating well after each addition.

Sift together flour, salt and baking soda; add creamed mixture alternatley with buttermilk, beginning and ending with buttermilk. Add vanilla extract and blend well.

Pour half the batter mixture into a well greased and floured 10-inch tube pan. Add chocolate syrup to remaining batter.

|
Pour chocolate mixture over the top of the other batter and fold gently with spatula for a marble effect. Bake at 350° for one hour and 10 minutes. Cool on wire cake rack. Frost as desired.
