Butter an 8x8 pan. In a heavy 3 qt saucepan , combine sugar, syrup, mil, salt and butter. Stir well with woden spoon and place over moderat heat. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally with wooden spoon to dissolve the sugar and syrup. When mixture boils, cover the pot and continue to boil for 2 minutes. Remove the cover and wash down the sides with a pastry brush dipped in water. Continue cooking, uncovered, over moderate heat , stirring only if needed to prevent scorching, until thermometer reads 235.
Remove the pot from the heat and allow it to cool without stirring or disturbing mixture until it reaches 110. Add vanilla and beat until the mixture is stiff and looses its gloss. Pour into prepared pan. Cool and cut into 1 inch squares. Store covered.
