Melt shortening in saucepan on low heat or in microwave. Remove from heat adn let cool. Add sugar, molasses and egg and beat well. Sift together flour, soda, cloves, ginger, cinnamon and salt. Mix well, chill. Form into 1 inch balls, roll in sugar and place on greased cookie sheet about 2 inches apart. Bake in 375 degree oven for 8-10 minutes.
