Preheat oven to 275 degrees. Use 1 cup sugar to caramelize in 3 or 4 cup mold.
Put the sugar in a heavy medium size saucepan and place it over medium heat grasping the
pan by the handle, turn and tip it gently until sugar melts and becomes amber colored. Pour
the carmel into the mold and tip the mold back and forth to spread it evenly over the sides
and bottom.
With a wire whisk, lightly beat eggs, add milk, salt, vanilla whisking just enough to mix, pour
into mold place mold in a large pan and pour enough hot water to come halfway up the sides
of the mold.
Bake for 2 hours.
