     Cardamom Braids or Buns

Ingredients
2 1/2 C milk
2 envelopes yeast
1 C sugar
8 C flour
1 C melted butter cooled
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp ground cardamom
1 egg
1/3 C finely blanched almonds
 

Instructions
Dissolve yeast in milk. Add 1/4 C sugar and 3 C flour and beat until smooth. Cover and set aside to rise until double in bulk (3/4 to 1 hour).
Add remaining sugar, butter, and salt. Combine cardamom and 4 1/2 C flour, beat into dough. Place 1/2 C flour on board for kneading. Knead 8 minutes place in greased bowl. Cover well and let rise until double in bulk. (3/4 to 1 hour)
Cut into 2 parts for 2 braids. divide each into 3 pieces and roll into 18 inch long ropes. Braid together.
Brush with slightly beaten egg and sprinkle with 1/4 C sugar, 1/3 C almonds. Let rise to double. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes.
