Add onion carrot olive oil, saute for 5 mins until soft. add garlic saute for 1 more minute. Add tomatoes, 6 cups of broth, thyme, bay leaf, salt and pepper, beans and sausage.
Cook for an hour over low heat at a gentle simmer. Add pasta, cook uncovered until pasta is tender. Add salt/pepper to taste. If soup is too thick add more broth.
Serve with grated cheese on top and an extra drizzle of olive oil if desired.

You can add a couple of handfuls of fresh greens like spinach or chard for last 15-20 mins.
