heat oil in large sauce pan over med-low heat, cook and stir the onion and garlic until translucent but not browned 6-7 min. stir in basil and cook and stir til basil is wilted about 10 min.
pour whole in whole tomatoes and bring to a boil stirring and chopping tomatoes into pieces with a spoon, pour in tomato sauce and stir crushing any large tomato left and bring to simmer, let simmer until slightly thickened and bubbling about 15 min.
stir in paste and fill the empty can with merlot, pour into sauce and stir well to combine, bring sauce back to simmer and stir in salt, pepper, oregano and sugar let simmer until seasonings are blended and sauce is heated through about 3 min
