Heat 1/4 cup butter in 9 inch skillet, add onion and cook til lightly brown, then add beef and seasonings continue cooking 5 min. Stir in gravy and heat until bubbly.

Spoon into a greased 9x13 (loaf cake) pan. Top meat mixture with the potatoes. Dot with 1-2 TBS. of butter then sprinkle with grated cheese.

Bake uncovered at 400 degrees for 15-20 minutes or until potatoes are lightly brown and casserole is bubbly.
I find it usually takes the full 20 min or more.

Can even make a day ahead, let cool cover and refrigerate. Add about 10 minutes to cooking time.
Experiment with your own ingredients...anything goes.
