Ingredients
1/2 Cup Shortening
1/2 Cup Butter
1 Cup White Sugar
1 Cup Molasses
1 Egg
3 Tsp. Baking Soda
3/4 Cup Boiling Water
1 Tbsp. Vanilla
3-4 Cups All Purpose Flour
 
1 Tsp. Cream Of Tartar
1 Tsp. Salt
1/2 Tsp. Cinnamon
1/2 Tsp. Ginger
1/2 Tsp. Cloves

Instructions
Cream together the shortening, butter and sugar until light. Blend in the molasses and egg.
Dissolve the soda in boiling water and add to the mixture; add vanilla. Sift together the dry ingredients and add gradually, mixing well to make a soft dough. Cool.
Roll out to thickness. A little more flour may be added, but just enough to make dough easy to handle.
Bake in a 375 Fahrenheit oven for 8 to 10 minutes. Yield 6-7 Dozen.
