Blend sugar and shortening. Add eggs, one at a time,beating after each. Add almond extract. Sift dry ingredients and add to first mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.
Pour into a 10 inch tube pan (not bundt pan), which has been greased and floured. Bake at 350 for 1 hour. Be sure top of cake is firm before removing from oven.
Let stand for 10 minutes and remove carefully from pan.
this can be cut into large wedges and frozen for later use with the Grand Marnier sauce and berries recipe....
