Brown two pounds of lean hamburger and onion; sprinkle salt and pepper on hamburger while browning. Drain hamburger. In a soup pot, add hamburger, bay leaf, beef broth, tomato sauce, tomato paste, diced tomatoes, uncooked rice, carrots, celery, and shredded cabbage. Add several tablespoons of Italian Seasonings (in the spice section, I buy a large bottle of the dry kind and add it until I like the taste). Simmer all ingredients for several hours.
