Preheat oven to 350. Butter a 13x9x2 pan. Combine apples and 3 tbsp. of sugar and cinnamon in a large bowl toss to coat apples. Transfer to baking pan. Put in pads of 1/2 stick of butter. Combine flour, 1/2 cup sugar in bowl add butter and mix in with fingers until peas size crumbs form. Sprinkle over apples. Bake about 1 hour. Serve warm with ice cream.
