Combine sugar, shortening, flour, cocoa and salt. Premix food coloring, water and 2/3 c. of buttermilk in mixing bowl. Beat until well blended. Add eggs, rest of the buttermilk and vanilla; beat for 1 minute. Mix vinegar and soda together and stir in batter by hand. Do not beat. Divide into 2 round cake pans sprayed with Pam. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until cake test is done. Cool completely before frosting.
