Beat butter with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add about half of the flour, the egg, sugar, milk, baking powder, vanilla and salt. Beat till thoroughly combined. Beat in remaining flour. Divide the dough in half.
On a lightly floured surface, roll half of the dough at a time 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. Cut into desired shapes with cookie cutters.
Place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 375 for 7 to 8 minutes or until edges just begin to brown.
Remove immediately to a cooling rack. Ice with butter icing when cooled. I love these when they are soft. The best sugar cookies!
