     Joyce Mitchell's Date Pudding

1lb dates chopped roughly
1 teaspoon soda dissolved in 1 cup boiling water
1 cup sugar 1tablespoon butter
1 1/4 cups flour
1/2 cup nut meats optional
1 egg
whipped cream
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanila
pinch salt
bake at 375 for 25 minutes

pour boiling water over chopped dates.. let stand while making batter. cream butter and sugar and add one egg, lightly beaten. Add flour and nuts. mix well. Add date mixture to batter, stir. Pour into greased 13 x9 pan. serve with whipped cream or following sauce.
melt butter and add brown sugar and salt. add 1/2 cup heavy cream. boil gently until slightly thickened. remove from heat and add vanilla. poke holes in cake/pudding and pour sauce over. serve extra on side. A tablespoon of rum or whisky may be added to sauce while cooking. Sauce by Janet klocke.
