Boil honey and let cool. Stir in other ingredients; mix well and set aside. 1/4 tsp. ground cloves 1/2 tsp. nutmeg 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. allspice 1 tsp. cinnamon
Sift dry ingredients together and add to honey mixture. Mix well. 1/3 c. chopped walnuts

Add citron and walnuts to dough. Place dough in refrigerator and chill overnight. Work with about a quarter of the dough at a time, keeping the rest chilled: roll out dough about 1/4" thick and cut into rectangles about 1 1/2" x 2". Place 1" apart on a greased cookie sheet. Bake about 10 minutes at 400 degrees or until no imprint is formed when touched lightly with finger. Be careful: these cookies burn easily. Continue to roll out chilled dough, cut and bake, until all has been used.

FROSTING: Boil together 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup sugar. Cool slightly and stir in 1/4 cup confectioners' sugar.

|
|
Brush frosting lightly on cookies with a confectioners' brush. If frosting cools too much while working, reheat, adding a few drops of water. Cool cookies and store for one week in a tightly covered container together with a small apple cut in half.
