Combine berries and lemon juice in a medium saucepan. Cook over medium - high heat for 5 minutes or until berries begin to burst. Stir in sugar. Bring mixture to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 2 - 3 minutes or until compote is slightly thick and reduced to about 3/4 cup.
