Preheat oven to 350 degrees
|

Cream shortening, sugar and eggs. Make a paste of the cocoa and the food coloring and add to the shortening mixture. Sift the flour and salt together into a bowl. Add the buttermilk to the sifted flour and salt alternately. Add the vanilla.

In a seperate bowl, mix vinegar and baking soda together. Add to the buttermilk mixture.
|
|
|
Pour batter into tow round 9 inch cake pans, greased and floured, or lined with wax paper. Bake at 25-30 minutes.
