Saute onion in butter until tender. Transfer to a large pot and blend in broth, bouillon, potatoes, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, and rice. Simmer until rice is tender, about 15 to 20 minutes. Add asparagus to pot; continue to simmer over low until vegetables are crisp-tender. Season to taste. Garnish with cheese.
