Scald milk by heating almost to boiling. Add salt, sugar, and shortening or oil. Slightly cool, then add egg and stir, then add yeast. Beat in flour until just mixed. Put in warm place until dough doubles in size.
Mix down and pinch off small pieces of dough and roll into balls about 1 inch around. Dip ball into melted butter, placing three balls into each section of a muffin tin. Let rise again until double, about one more hour. Bake at 400 for 12-15 minutes.
This recipe can also be used for cinnamon rolls. Roll out dough after first rise and sprinkle with butter, sugar, cinnamon, nuts, and raisins as desired. Roll dough up and cut into rounds. Let rise again and bake.
