1 loaf (9 oz) French bread, preferably day-old, cut into 1/4 inch slices
6 oz Gruyere cheese, shredded
Instructions
Spray or grease shallow 1 1/2 quart bake pan. In bowl, whisk eggs, milk, mustard, 1/4 t salt and 1/4 t fresh ground black pepper.
Arrange half of bread in bottom of baking dish, overlapping slices if necessary. Pour half of egg mixture over bread. Sprinkle with 2/3 of Gruyere cheese. Cover with remaining bread, overlapping slices. Pour remaining egg mixture over bread. Gently press down. Sprinkle with remaining Gruyere cheese. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake 50-60 minutes or until puffed and golden brown. Tip of knife inserted into center comes out clean. Cover top for last 15 minutes if browning too quickly.
Remove from oven.Let stand 10 minutes before serving.
