Whisk sugar and flour together in saucepan. Whisk egg yolks into the sugar and flour. Gradually whisk milk into mix. Cook on Med heat until thickened, stirring constantly. Add vanilla just prior to removing heat. While still hot, pour over sliced bananas and vanilla wafers. Chill until cold.
