Prepare and bake cake based on directions on box in 2 9 inch rounds, cool. You will only need one cake round- save the other for next time.
Prepare pudding, mix in pumpkin and brown sugar.
Crumble 1/2 of one cake into the bottom of a trifle bowl. Press down.
Add 1/2 of pumpkin/pudding mixture. Add layer of whipped topping. Repeat layers.
Optional- Sprinkle with sweet cinnamon sprinkles.
