Cream shortning, sugar, eggs.
Make a paste of cocoa and coloring and add to mixture.
Mix salt and vanilla with buttermilk and add alternately with flour and other mixture.
DO NOT BEAT!
Bake at 350 degrees for 30 mins.
Cool completely.
