Cook pasta according to directions and drain, reserving one cup of
pasta water
Meanwhile, heat olive oil in a skillet on medium heat. Add garlic
and saute for one minute. Add tomato paste, and allow to
caramelize for a minute. Then add tomatoes, salt, and sugar. Cook
for 5 minutes, or until tomatoes are slightly tender.
Add 1/4 cup of pasta water to the sauce, and give it a quick stir.
Turn off the heat, and add the fresh basil. Add cooked pasta to the
sauce and toss to coat. If the sauce needs to be thinned out, add
more pasta water.
Top with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese.
