     Blind Date Cake

Ingredients
1 1/4 cups boiling water
1 cup dates, cut up
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/4 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
 
3 tablespoons cocoa
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1/2 cup chocolate chips

Instructions
Pour boiling water over dates and let cool. When cool, add baking soda.
Cream shortening, sugar, eggs, and vanilla. Add flour, salt, cocoa and the dates.
Spread in rectangular cake pan and sprinkle top with sugar, nuts and chocolate chips.
Bake at 325 degrees for 45 minutes.
