     New England Boiled Dinner

Ingredients
smoked picnic ham shoulder/shank bone in
cabbage
carrots
potatoes
turnips
water
salt
pepper
 

Instructions
Put the shank in a 5 or 6 quart large pot and cover with water and add salt and pepper. Bring to a simmer and then cover, lower the heat until it is barely simmering. Keep at a low simmer for 2-4 hours or until the meat is tender (a fork goes through easily)
Remove fat and bone Add carrots. Cook 30 minutes. Stir occasionally.
Add potatoes and turnips, Cook 30 minutes. Stir occasionally.
place cabbage on top. Cook 30 minutes more. Stir occasionally.
Serving Suggestions
Serve in bowl or deep plate with dinner roll
