Cream the butter and sugar in a bowl until light and fluffy. Add the egg yolk, sifted dry ingredients and nuts. Mix well.
Shape in small balls with hands dusted with confectioners sugar. Place on a greased baking sheet 3 inches apart. Place a piece of candied cherry in the center of each cookie. Bake in a moderate oven until golden brown. Remove to racks.
