Ingredients
5 large cooking apples
1/3 C sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
salt
3 T butter
3/4 C milk
1/3 C light molasses
1/4 C water
1 C flour
 
2 tsp double acting baking powder
3 T shortening

Instructions
peel and slice apples. in large bowl toss apples, sugar, cinnamon and 1/4 tsp salt. spoon mixture into 8x8 baking dish.
in small saucepan over low heat melt butter. remove from heat. stir in molasses and water. pour over apple mixture and set aside.
in bowl mix flour, baking powder, 3/4 tsp salt. cut in shortening until resembles coarse crumbs. stir in milk. drop dough by heaping tablespoons into 9 mounds on apple mixture. bake 45 minutes at 375.
to serve, break up crust and stir into the apple mixture. serve warm. top with milk or cream.
