Generously grease 2 - 9" round cake pans and flour lightly. Cream butter and crisco, sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs. Comine soda, cocoa, flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl. Add some flour mixture to batter then some milk, then more flour etc ending up with flour. Blend well about 1 1/2 minutes with mixer.
Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes. Cool 10 minutes and remove from pans. Cool on cake rack.
Frost with chocolate frosting.
