Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Grease cookie sheet(I did not)
In a large bowl, cream together butter and 1 1/2 cups sugar until smooth.
Mix in eggs; beat well.
Add in molasses; beat well.
In separate bowl, combine flour, baking soda, baking powder, ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves and allspice, heaping the measures if you like a lot of spice.
Stir dry ingredients into the molasses mixture just until blended.
Roll the dough into small balls, dip tops into remaining 1 cup sugar.(I roll ball in sugar)
Place cookies about 2 inches apart on the cookie sheet.
Bake for 10-15 minutes until the tops are cracked.
Bake longer for a crispy cookie, less time for chewy cookie.
Cool on wire racks.
