Sift the flour and a pinch of salt into a bowl.
Rub in the butter until fine and crumbly, and make a well using a
flat-bladed knife, stir in the combined egg and milk to form a soft
dough.

Put the syrup ingredients in a pan with 2 cups of water and stir over
medium heat until the sugar has dissolved.
|
|
|
Bring to the boil, then gently drop dessertspoons of the dough into
the syrup.
|
|
|
Cover and reduce the heat to simmer for 20 minutes, or until a
knife inserted into a dumpling comes out clean.
