Preheat oven to 325 degrees and lightly grease three 8 inch cake pans. Combine buttermilk and soda. Let stand for 4 to 5 minutes. Beat egg whites until stiff and set aside. Cream butter, sugar, and shortening together. Add egg yolks, 1 at a time and beat after each. Add milk, alternately with flour and stir in vanilla. Fold in egg whites, coconut, and nuts. Pour into three 8 inch cake pans. Bake at 325 degrees for 25 minutes.
