Prehear oven to 325 degrees. Combine soda and buttermilk and let stand after stirring. Beat egg whites until stiff. Cream sugar, butter, add egg yolks one at a time beating after each. Add buttermilk and flour to cream mixture. Stir in vanilla. FOld in egg whites. Stir in pecans and coconut. Bake in well greased 13x9 inch pan, floured for approximately 40 minutes. Test with toothpick. If not done add only 5 minutes at a time. Keep moist.
