Shape hamburger into a 4-inch diameter patty. Sprinkle lightly with salt on both sides, then place in the freezer for 5 minutes to help patty keep its shape.

Preheat the grill to high. Cut the whole bacon strip in half crosswise. Cook in skillet over medium heat, flipping every couple of minutes, until crispy and well done, 6 - 8 minutes. Place on paper towel to drain.

Remove patty from freezer and place on grill. Cook for 1 - 2 minutes per side (medium-rare) or until desired doneness is reached. Place the cheese on top of the burger the last few seconds of cooking so it just begins to melt. Toast bun halves on grill (optional).

Place the patty on the bun bottom. Lay the bacon strips side by side over the top. Place the onion on top of the bacon. Spread the BBQ sauce evenly over the inside of the top of the bun. Serve immediately.
