Combine yeast and 1/2 t granulated sugar. Add warm water, stir. Stand until foamy (about 5 minutes). Combine 1 1/2 c flour, 4 T granulated sugar and salt in large bowl.
Melt butter. Using electric mixer on low, beat in 1/2 c milk, 3 T butter, egg and yeast mixture. Beat on medium for 2 minutes. Stir in 1 1/2 c flour to make soft dough.
Knead dough until smooth and elastic (about 10 minutes). Cover, let sit for 10 minutes. In small bowl, combine remaining granulated sugar, almonds, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Roll dough into 12x10 rectangle. Brush with most of remaining butter and sprinkle sugar mixture on top.
Roll the dough tightly from one long side. Cut into 12 slices. Place in 13x9 inch pan. Brush with rest of butter. Cover. Rise in warm place 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350º. Bake for 20 minutes. Cool briefly. Mix powdered sugar, vanilla and remaining milk (2 t); drizzle over warm buns.
