Cream butter and 2 1/2 cups sugar; add egg yolks, beating well. Add soda to buttermilk; add flour and buttermilk alternately until all is added to mixture. Add vanilla; fold in stiffly beaten egg whites, with 1/2 cup sugar kept out. Bake in tube or Bundt pan at 375 degrees for 1 hour, then at 325 degrees for 10 minutes. Cool before taking out of tube pan.
