Cream sugar and shortening. Beat eggs; combine with creamed mixture, mixing well. Sift dry ingredients together, add half of dry ingredients to creamed mixture; add milk and vanilla, mix. Add rest of dry ingredients. Drop from teaspoon and flatten slightly; sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes, or until done. To make them really soft, remove them from oven just before they are really done. They firm up some after they cool.
