Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Set out a large baking sheet. In a large bowl, cream butter and 1 cup sugar until light. Add egg, cream, and vanilla; stir until well blended. Sift flour, with baking powder, and salt; gradually stir into butter mixture. Cover bowl and chill dough for at least 30 minutes. Turn dough out onto lightly floured, smooth surface. Roll out 1/8 inch thick (for a little cook, roll out 1/4 inch thick). Using a star cutter, cut out cookies. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup sugar. Place cookies on the baking sheet and bake until light brown around the edges, about 8 minutes.
