combine flour, baking soda and salt in small bowl. Beat butter, sugar, brown sugar and vanilla in large mixer until creamy. Add eggs, one by one being well after each addition. Gradually beat in flour mixture. Stir in chocolate chips and nuts. Drop by rounded tablespoon on to ungreased baking sheets.

Amy's notes- I do not always soften the butter. As long as it is not really hard, it's okay. I bake my cookies for about 6-7 minutes and then switch the pans on the racks in the oven and bake for another couple minutes. This evens out the cooking. I do not use wire racks, I put the cookies on paper towels until mostly cool, but still sort of warm. They go right into a tightly sealed container. If they are too hot, they will stick together, but if they are just slightly warm, they will stay soft and chewy with melted chocolate chips! Most of the time I do not use nuts, but if I do, I use walnuts.
