In a bowl stir together first 5 ingredients.
Add water and egg; stir until smooth.

Pour 1 quart cooking oil into large skillet to a depth of 1/2 inch. Heat over medium heat to 375 degrees. Or heat deep fryer to 375 degrees.

Dip chicken in batter (stir batter occasionally.
Carefully add chicken to hot oil a few pieces at a time. Fry 2 to 3 minutes; turning once; continue to cook until golden brown.

For Herb Batter-
Follow basic recipe. Adding 1 teaspoon dried basil leaves and 1 clove garlic, minced.
For Ber Batter-
Follow basic recipe. Omit water and add 1/3 cup cold beer.
