Cream 1/2 cup crisco & 1 1/2 cup sugar, add eggs, coloring, water and 1 tsp vanilla. Add cocoa, salt, 2 cups flour and buttermilk. Beat slowly, use own judgment on beating. Stir in vinegar and soda. (Do not beat in, but fold). Bake 30 minutes at 350 in 2 round pans.
